Administration & Sections Administration, Commissions and Sections

Administration
Consisting of the Director's Office, the Business Operations Group and Public Information Office.

Aquifer Protection Section
The section has four units including Animal Feeding Operations permitting and compliance, Groundwater Investigation, Groundwater Planning, Groundwater Protection and Land Application permits and compliance.
  Laboratory Section
Provides chemical, physical and microbiological analyses of surface water, groundwater, sediment, fish tissue and spill samples from around the state.
Business Operations Group
is comprised of the Budget Office, Environmental Technologies Unit, Grant Management Unit, Information Processing Unit, Staff Services Office, Technical Assistance and Certification Unit and support for the Well Contractors Certification Commission.
 

Planning Section
This section is comprised of four units and integrates Basinwide and Nonpoint Source planning activities with Classification and Standards, and Modeling/TMDL programs.

Construction Grants and Loans Section
A non-regulatory section that operates as both a financial and technical resource for publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities.
  Surface Water Protection Section
The Point Source Branch is responsible for the NPDES program, collection systems and pretreatment; the Wetlands and Stormwater Branch includes 401 Certification oversite, stormwater permitting, transportation permitting and program development.
Environmental Sciences Section
The four units and two teams evaluate the state's aquatic resources through a variety of specialized biological, chemical and physical techniques to provide the basis for sound scientific decisions.  Rapid Response Teams in the Tar-Pamlico and Neuse River basins provide timely evaluation of acute water quality related events such as fish kills and algal blooms.
  Regional Offices
There are seven Regional Offices of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Regional office staff perform DENR and DWQ duties on a local level.
