The Pamlico River Rapid Response Team, located in Washington, N.C., is responsible for monitoring water quality conditions in the lower Pamlico River watershed. The team's primary charge is rapid evaluation of acute water quality related events like fish kills and algal blooms. During routine operations, the team performs regular monitoring duties along the river, collecting twice-monthly ambient water quality monitoring at long term sites and works collaboratively with other research agencies in monitoring field parameters (e.g. dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity) to track conditions. The Pamlico Team, which began operations in June 1998 has been involved with many cooperative research efforts involving fish disease, harmful algae, and harmful algal blooms*. Team members frequently interact with the public in an educational capacity to pass along a better understanding of water quality issues

Current water quality conditions at three locations on the lower Pamlico River (Hwy 17 Bridge at Washington, Channel Marker 5, and Channel Marker 3) can be viewed on a US Geological Survey web site. These readings are made possible by monitoring platforms funded by the Division of Water Quality. Instruments on these platforms perform real-time measurements of dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, temperature, and depth, which are then uplinked to satellite and to the USGS computers every hour.
